Have you ever not been able to find the right words to thank someone for their help?   That’s how I feel about Dr. Antonacci.  He took away neck & head pain accompanied by sick headaches that lasted over a year.  I worked with an ice pack around my neck and was on so many medications I really can’t remember them all.  That’s all in the past since Dr. A did an anterior cervical disectomy.  I’m able to live a normal life again!  Something I didn’t think would happen again. 

Joel, his assistant is just wonderful, very caring and truly concerned with your questions.  The office staff is professional and friendly.  I never waited long periods of time for my appointments and we all know what a rare thing that is these days.

As a 51 year old male, with a wife, 2 young daughters, and 2 teenage sons, it was no fun dealing with lower back pain on and off for the last 20-30 years. There seemed to be no end to the various kinds of non-surgical treatments, pills, chiropractic adjustments, and devices available in the marketplace that promised relief for chronic back pain. I could have spent another 10 years trying one thing after another.  I wasn’t considered a candidate for surgery – everyone wanted me to try this or that new procedure, exercise, physical therapy, epidural shots, acupuncture, disc decompression treatments, inversion tables, shoe inserts, oral cortisone regimens, etc.

Out of curiosity I started investigating surgical options for dealing with L4-L5 pain, and I was again amazed to find so many different “minimally invasive” procedures – anterior, posterior, or sideways disc removal techniques using various fusion and/or artificial disc hardware, or even a less evasive herniated discectomy. My local surgeons touted the latest and greatest advancements in minimally evasive procedures, but they felt I would be in MORE pain than I was in presently.  They recommended I wait until my back got worse, that I was too young for lower back surgery, and it wasn’t worth the risk.  I had seen plenty of others with “failed” back surgeries, and that was something I did not want.

It wasn’t until I saw the results obtained by my sister-in-law that I knew who to go to – Dr. Antonacci. He operated on her when other doctors couldn’t or wouldn’t. Other doctors told her she was too old for lower back surgery – they wanted her to continue all the other non-surgical procedures that everyone hawks.  What Dr. Antonacci did was nothing short of a miracle, reconstructing her lumber so that within less than a year she had resumed her active lifestyle that included traveling several times a year.

In Octobor 2009 I met Dr. Antonacci for myself and learned that he has his own techniques for performing posterior spinal surgery that he has been perfecting over the years. Two months later (December 2009) he performed my posterior L4-L5 fusion.  Immediately and every day afterwards I saw improvement.

It is now 6 months later (May , 2010) and I am able to do heavy workouts; pick up and tussle with my kids; mow and trim the lawn again;  help coach 2 softball and soccer teams; play 18 holes of golf; row a boat for ½ an hour; and anything else I want to do without restriction.  My back gets tired by the end of the day, but the next day it’s ready to go again! My out of pocket expenses for the surgery, tests, and travel were under $500 - a lot less than I would have spent on all the other alternatives, and with real results!

If you’re on the fence as to whether or not to have back surgery, I highly recommending seeing Dr. Antonacci. He’s the best.

Two years ago, my husband was diagnosed with spinal stenosis and because of his other health issues was told that there were no options left for him—he would eventually lose the use of his legs and live the rest of his life in a wheelchair.  We immediately made an appointment with Dr. Antonacci for a “second” opinion.  During our initial meeting with him, he gave us something no one else did—hope.  In the months before the operation, he took every precaution, setting us up with some of the finest doctors who would be working with him, to insure that my husband’s other health issues were addressed before, during, and after the surgeries.  Dr. Antonacci, because of his professionalism and caring, for each patient, gave my husband his life back.  When I was diagnosed with a cervical spine problem and heard the word “surgery”, I didn’t hesitate to make an appointment with Dr. Antonacci—I wanted the best!  As for myself, it has been seven weeks since the surgery and all of my initial symptoms have disappeared.  I’m feeling better for the first time in six months.  Thank you Doctor from the both of us.

           Dr. M. Darryl Antonacci is highly professional and caring, and I heartedly recommend him to my friends and family. He has extensive knowledge of spine and scoliosis. The quality of care, attention to detail, customer “patient” service and professionalism of my doctor and his staff has provided me with state - of - the - art medical advice and care and I am eternally grateful.

            I injured my neck, on the job, in July 2008 and got reinjured on January 21st, 2009. I am a 34 year old female with cervical spine and shoulder injuries.  Neither Medical Doctors nor Chiropractors could alleviate my symptoms, which included severe pain in my neck, right shoulder, arm, and hand, numbness and pins and needles in my fingers, and muscle spasms. I had difficulty sleeping, studying, and performing most routine daily activities such as personal care, preparing meals, and riding in an automobile greatly aggravated the symptoms. My life became a vicious cycle of chronic pain and hopelessness.

            After 8^th months of waiting for approval from the Workman’s Compensation Carrier I was granted approval for surgery. I pondered on the decision I had to make. I asked myself over and over, “if this surgery would alleviate my pains or make things worst”? On October 26^th,2009 Dr D. Antonacci performed an Anterior Arthrodesis C4-5, C5-6, Anterior cervical discectomy C4-5, C5-6, Anterior plating C4-5, C5-6, Left iliac crest bone graft and prosthetic cage placement C4-5, C5-6.

            I would like to thank Dr. Antonacci for having performed a very successful surgery. Also thank everyone associated with my treatment, including Joel Gorenstein and the staff at Mount Sinai Medical Center, I was treated very well. I have received wonderful results from the surgery he performed. I have improved dramatically my pains have completely vanished, and I have much more energy and regaining my strength.  My right arm strength is improving and I am essentially without pain.  I no longer feel that pressure sensation in my right posterior neck.  And although I know I am not completely healed yet, I have very little limitation in the range of motion in my neck. 

            Now I have a new beginning to look forward to being able to regain at least 99 percent of my life, like a normal person, pain and medication free. I’ll soon start college again and hope to return to work if Mount Sinai will have me once again as part of there staff.

When I went to see Dr. Antonacci for a “second” opinion, I expected a cursory tour of my past medical history and the inevitable recommendation for spinal surgery ASAP.  The truth of the matter was that Dr. Antonacci was not my second opinion, or even my third.  I had lived with chronic back pain for years that slowly progressed to be cumbersome and limiting to my normal activities.  I had seen orthopods, neurosurgeons, sports medicine and rehab doctors in the past.  I had repeated imaging studies, physical therapy sessions, and steroid injections.  All of them came to the same conclusion: I needed surgical intervention to remedy my condition.   I should probably mention that I am a physician practicing in the Princeton community for over 30 years.  These practioners were my colleagues and contemporaries.  I made informed decisions to see every one of them.  I had opportunities to discuss my options with several surgeons, and ultimately I chose Dr. Antonacci to perform my surgery because I believed in him and his ability to fix my problem. 

I walked into his office that day expecting the same discussion I had had with other surgeons.  What went on was entirely different.  He asked me pointed questions about my limitations, about my pain progression, what I could and what I could no longer do.  He asked me what my understanding was of my disease and what I thought was the next step in improving current condition.  He then went on and illustrated through my imaging studies and models on hand, what the pathology was in my spine and how he planned to fix them surgically.  He was patient and knowledgeable as well as confident that he could perform what needed to be done.  I knew then that he was the surgeon for me. 

When asked to write a testimonial, I wholeheartedly agreed.  I know that Dr. Antonacci was trained in the best spine centers in the country.  I know that he currently keeps up to date in his field attending as well as lecturing about his specialty all over the country and the world.  I know that he has an excellent staff, from his office support to his mid level practitioners (physician assistant).  His choice in surgical centers offers the best in ancillary care and nursing care.  All of these are really secondary to the fact that it is Dr. Antonacci himself that convinced me to agree to my procedure.

I am now approximately 12 weeks post surgery.  My activities are so much different from where they were prior to the operation.  I can walk miles without hesitation for the fear of pain. Though I am still in a rehabilitation phase, my wife and I went on a recent trip to Europe knowing that we could keep up and enjoy the sights on the tours.  It is a great feeling to know that as I get older that I can still enjoy my life.  I would recommend Dr. Antonacci to anyone considering surgery with out any reservations.

After being involved in a car accident this past June in which the other driver ran his stop sign, I began experiencing pain radiating down my right arm into my hand.  This was followed by a persistent tingling sensation and, eventually, numbness.  Within a month the numbness was occurring in my left arm and hand as well, and I had lost most of the ability to control the functions of both hands.

I returned to the orthopedist I had seen directly after the accident, who referred me to a cervical surgeon.  Although he seemed competent enough, I did not feel that he was a good match for me.  I did not get the impression that he understood what I was experiencing.  I began looking for a second opinion.

A friend of mine recommended Dr. Antonacci’s office.  I contacted them and was given an appointment quickly.  By this time I was constantly dropping things, and my quality of life had deteriorated.  I could no longer enjoy anything because of the constant pain.

 Dr. Antonacci gave me the respect and consideration I felt I needed to get me through this.  He patiently answered all my questions, was thorough in his explanations of what the surgery would entail, and was patient with my nervousness and panicky tears (after all, this was my NECK!).  He was honest in his expectations as well as the risk, and knew that I would get worse if I didn’t address the problem soon.  (He was right—one day not long before the surgery was scheduled, the numbness began in my right leg and I fell on the sidewalk.)

The day of the surgery his calm demeanor soothed my out of control nerves.  While I was in recovery he found my partner in the waiting room, showed her the pictures of my new neck hardware, and explained everything that would be coming up for me—the recovery process, pain management, recuperation time, etc.  As it was, I was able to go home the next day! My follow-up visit was an extension of the personalized care I had been given throughout this ordeal. Dr. Antonacci, Joel, and everyone else were always there for me.  Thank you!!!

           As a former professional dancer (San Francisco Ballet, Warner bros. musicals, Broadway) movement was second nature to me, as instinctive as breathing. Until it wasn’t. Last year age, osteoarthritis, and a host of other spinal problems caught up with me and caused such pain I could no longer walk, sit or stand. I was immobilized and depressed.  A failed spinal operation didn’t help the situation.

            Fortunately, several doctors recommended I see a Dr. Darryl Antonacci. Reluctantly I limped in with my cane, bent over like an old witch in a fairytale, all I needed was a wart on my nose. Dr. Antonacci explained the procedure he’d developed and the risks involved in careful detail. I took a deep breath and said, “O.K. Do it.” Best decision I ever made. Today the pain is nearly gone, I’m walking upright, and improving every day. Thank you, Dr. Antonacci, you are a true virtuoso in solving spinal problems and I can now hear the music as I begin to walk again.

Where do I begin!  My name is Jessica and I’m 21 years old. I found out that I had grade 3-4 spondylolisthesis last February 2008.  I was experiencing extreme pain in my right leg, numbness in my left leg, and lower back pain that made it difficult to do normal, every day activities.  Leaning over the sink to brush my teeth, sitting for long periods of time, bending over to pick things up off the ground and even sneezing would throw me to the floor in pain.

My condition reached the grade 3-4 level over the course of several years because it was overlooked by my primary care doctor and I had no idea I had this spinal condition.  The only thing I knew was I was only 17 years old when the leg pain began, and each year I felt more and more pain until life in general was miserable and my physical capabilities were extremely limited.

When I was finally referred to a specialist in my home town, I was informed that surgery was a must—and the procedure for doing so was extremely risky.   According to that specialist, the surgery used an invasive approach that required making incisions in both the front and the back.  This particular neurologist left my parents and I feeling overwhelmed, helpless and emotionally deflated.  So we moved on to get a second opinion.  This time we headed to Boston, hoping for a better outlook after meeting the orthopedic surgeon.  Let’s just say he painted a very bleak picture and described the surgery as near-impossible.  He looked at my MRI while we were in his office and the first word out of his mouth was “Wow.” He was totally unprofessional, and for a second time, we left crying.

The third neurologist we made an appointment with was from the same hospital in Boston-but we couldn’t get an appointment with him until 6 months later, but we made one anyway.

During this time, my aunt’s had been doing some research on the internet and typed in “spondylolisthesis,” and Dr. Antonacci was the first result to appear! We looked into it and although his offices weren’t right down the block, we were still willing to give it a try.  My mom called Dr. Antonacci’s secretary, Chris and explained to her that I had grade 3-4 spondylolisthesis and mom asked if there was a way to meet with him.  Well, without hesitation, Chris said, “Absolutely, he’ll definitely want to meet with her, is two weeks from today too soon?” Two Weeks?!   We had been waiting months in between specialist visits, so this felt like Christmas!

Two weeks later, on July 8^th, my parents and I drove 3 ½ hours to his Manhattan office.  Let me just say, it was well-worth the trip!  Dr. A met with us that morning and we fell in love with him!  For the first time, we heard optimism and confidence.  Of course there can be complications with any surgery, and yes, sometimes things go wrong—we already knew that; but Dr. Antonacci focused on the positive.

He didn’t look at me like a number, or treat me like a “patient with grade 4 spondylolisthesis,” he examined me and made a determination based on my body’s physical condition.  He noticed that my posture was perfect and upright, which isn’t normally the case with this grade of spondylolisthesis.  He was the first and only doctor to notice that about me!  Based on this observation, he determined that he would only need to make one incision through my back without having to manipulate my spine.  Already his procedure would be less-invasive by far than any of the other doctor’s approaches.  Every other doctor I went to treated my case the same as the next patient; they never acknowledged my upright posture, combined with my young age and overall physical health—I was merely another number and operation to them.

Dr. Antonacci barely blinked an eye before he knew the exact procedure he would do for me.  His humble confidence in his ability was a breath of fresh air.  We never felt rushed by Dr. Antonacci on any occasion.  He answered all of our questions with extreme detail and never made us feel for one moment that we were wasting his time or using too much of it.  My parents and I felt so thrilled and relieved after meeting with him that we were high-fiving each other when we left his office!  All of our searching had finally paid off.  We knew we found the man for the job!

We began to get the ball rolling as soon as we met with Dr. Antonacci.  Unfortunately, I had many difficulties with my insurance company for months because Dr. Antonacci was out of my network in my health plan—typical health insurance glitches.  But that didn’t stop his secretary Chris from being one of the most HELPFUL people to deal with throughout every aggravating moment.  I had to call Chris with question after question for weeks on end, but she was always cheerful and glad to be of assistance!  Bonnie is the other secretary at his New Jersey office and she was just as great!  They made every appointment easy and breezy, and many a time—Chris had to do the dirty work and hunt down people from the insurance company numerous times on my behalf.  Every person who worked behind the scenes for Dr. Antonacci before, during, and after the surgery was respectful, helpful, friendly, caring, and considerate and the most professional crew my family and I have ever met.  Thank you Chris, Bonnie, Joel (for answering all of my crazy questions!), Dr. Sandel (for being so sweet and so awesome!), the staff at the Hospital, and every other person who helped me make it through that week in the hospital after surgery!! I couldn’t have done it without all of you!!!!

I had my surgery February 9^th of this year—without any complications whatsoever!  Thank you Jesus!!  Dr. Antonacci’s cool, calm, and collected bedside manner kept me and my family comfortable and sane throughout the entire experience.  It has been 2 months now, and I already feel the changes in body from the surgery, and how they are positively affecting my life.  For the first time in a year, I CAN SNEEZE AGAIN!!!  AND IT FEELS GREAT!!!  I was so nervous to sneeze for the first time after surgery—I was expecting to fall to the floor in pain as an unconscious reaction, but I don’t need to anymore! The surgery was worth it for that change if nothing more….But that’s not all I’ve noticed!  I’ve been sleeping great at night without any discomfort, brushing my teeth over the sink doesn’t strain my back….and I’m sure there’s only more to come!  I feel like I have my life back again, and I haven’t even started physical therapy yet!  I know the road to recovery is long but it is completely worth it—trust me, if you are in the same situation I was—take a chance on Dr. Antonacci!!! Make the phone call—it can only help, and once you meet him, you’ll know exactly what I’ve been talking about.  I trusted him with my life, and he didn’t disappoint!  I know God sent him our way!!

          In 1993, at 24 years of age, I injured my back at work. I was told by doctors that nothing could be done because my L5-S1 disc was bulging into the center, towards my spine. The doctors said to collect my workers compensation until it ran out, then collect Social Security Disability and try to make the best of a painful life.

          The Chiropractor I was seeing at the time didn’t believe them and proceeded to adjust my spine and after 6 months I was able to function quite well, considering where I had been. I couldn’t go back to my old job and I was limited as to what and how I could lift but life was pretty good considering the original diagnosis.

          In 1998 I suffered a severe muscle spasm. I was in bed for two weeks and it took about three months to recover completely. These muscle spasms became a regular occurrence, increasing in frequency and severity. At their worst, they occurred twice a year with a 5 to 6 month recovery. In August 2008 it happened again but this time the symptoms were so debilitating and unrelenting I truly thought I would end up like the doctors said, collecting Social Security Disability and making the best of a painful life. The pain affected my legs severely. I couldn’t walk long enough to do the grocery shopping. All I did was work and lie around.

          Then I found Dr Antonacci.

          I searched the internet looking for anyone who could help. After all, it had been 15 years since the original injury. Surely someone has found a way to fix this by now, I thought. I came across Dr Antonacci’s website and read the testimonials of people just like me. I “Googled” Dr Antonacci and found his name associated with different hospitals and periodicals, all showing him in a good light, so I decided to see him.

          It almost seemed like Dr Antonacci didn’t want to operate on me. He kept asking about my lifestyle and how the pain was affecting my life. I felt like I had to convince him it was bad enough to do the surgery. After all of the testing and diagnosing, when the day came for Dr Antonacci to decide whether or not he would do the surgery, I was fully prepared to beg him on my hands and knees to do it.

          I didn’t have too. After more questions about how the pain affected my lifestyle, Dr Antonacci gave me the best news of my life. He would do the surgery.

          That day I realized Dr Antonacci was only making sure I had exhausted all other reasonable options before turning to surgery. He only had my best interest in mind.

          I had the surgery Jan 9, 2009. It was a complete success. The surgery was a lot harder on me than I expected but it was well worth it. At four months out, I am pain free. My back is still a little weak from the surgery but Dr Antonacci said it would probably take about six months to recover from the surgery.

          Everyone throughout the process was a pleasure to deal with. Dr Antonacci’s office staff was very helpful and kind.   Dr Antonacci gave me my life back.

In October of 2007 I woke up one morning with immense pain in my lower back and unable to walk or move very well. Having played basketball and many other sports from a young age, it was crazy to find out that at 17 years old I woke up and had two herniated disks in my lumbar spine. I was in my junior year of high school; a time where I should have been going to school, searching for colleges, hanging out with friends, and having a great time. Instead I spent from October of ’07 until June of ’08 debilitated by back pain that radiated down my leg. I spent most of my time lying in bed, being that sitting and walking caused pain after only a short while and was forced to go on half day homeschooling. Every aspect of my life suffered because of my back pain and it was a very stressful time for me and my family.

I saw seven doctors, underwent three cortisone injections by a pain management specialist, and did not receive any relief.  When doctors started suggesting surgery my parents and I struggled with what to do and what decision would be the right one to make. I was referred to Doctor Antonacci by a pain management specialist and my first visit with him was May of 2009. Doctor Antonacci evaluated me with a diagnosis of diskogenic back pain which he believed could be fixed with a spinal fusion at both levels. He spent as much time as needed with us to answer questions and reassure us we were making the right decision. Doctor Antonacci was extremely confident and patient with us which helped to ease our minds. I had surgery at the end of June 2009 and with the help of Doctor Antonacci and his staff at the Hospital (Joel!) it went extremely well. Writing this a little over a year since, thanks to Doctor Antonacci I have my life back, I am pain free, and I am able to go off to college!              Prior to visiting your office, I had been deathly fearful of touching upon the topic of my spine. I was always miserable because of it, and this feeling worsened when I learned I would have to undergo a surgical procedure. However, coming to your office regularly somehow reassured me. Dear Doctor Antonacci

I am writing this letter to thank you for ridding me of the pain that prevented me from living my life as I always had in the past.  I lived with pain for four years before the lumbar fusion surgery.  Now, ten months after the surgery, I am working out five times per week, lost twenty five pounds, can play with and lift my two year old, all without pain!

Prior to the surgery, you spent a large amount of time with my wife and I answering all our questions.  You explained the procedure thoroughly and gave a detailed description of what the recovery would be like.  This helped us to prepare and make the process go smoothly.

The intention of my letter today is to deeply and sincerely express my gratitude for the many, many ways you and your staff have assisted, cared, and supported me and my family with my spinal cord injury.

In August of ’08, upon making first contact with your office, I was so very, very scared, because at that time I still did not have a diagnosis or treatment plan from an accident that occurred in March ’07.  I was so very, very pleased at the professionalism and kindness I received.    Approximately 2 weeks later, my husband and I had our first opportunity to meet you.  We were afraid, nervous, confused, unhappy, etc., as my “injury” had now negatively affected every aspect of our lives.  I was spiraling towards a deep depression and I was wondering if “pain” was going to be with me every minute for the rest of my life.  Our initial consultation with you couldn’t have gone better.  You listened, you took the time to answer all of our questions, you were direct with your responses, but “kind and caring” in the delivery.  We left your office with such confidence that you were the right physician for us.  Within weeks, we had a proper diagnosis, treatment plan, and finally restored hope!

Hi, my name is GERARD and I began working at a very young age.  All of the jobs involved heavy lifting or,standing long periods of times and bouncing around trucks and driving heavy equiptment.  At age 47 I finally could not walk, that was October of 2007.  After several doctors,therapist,herbalist,priest,and just about everyone I know giving friendly advise, my sister had called and said her neck operation was a success, and that Dr. Antonacci was great.

So I made the appointment and went in April 2008.  Upon arrival to the new York office,I knew this was a good move.  After meeting with Dr Antonacci, he explained everything in a way that I not only understood but was very comfortable with it. My hat is off to you Dr.Antonacci, thus this testimonial…In Sept. 2006,while in Barcelona, Spain; I really developed severe pain in my lower back. When my wife and I returned to the U.S., I embarked on a program to find out what was really wrong with me.

I visited several spine surgeons, who suggested facet injections, epidurals, and then radio frequency rizotomies that were done by two fine pain management doctors, but to no avail. 

At age 79, I really did not want to have an invasive procedure, but the pain was only getting worse, and my quality of life went way down hill. At this point, I had to make a decision to have back surgery. After exhaustive investigation, I was advised to see, Dr. Patrick F. O’Leary, in New York City.  Doctor O’Leary gave me a thorough examination, reviewed my M.R.I,s, X-rays etc and then called me a week later, and asked me to see his colleague, Dr. Antonacci, for a second opinion. 

When I met with the good doctor, I found Dr. Antonacci to be quite sympathetic and he proceeded to give me two options for the surgery.  At this point, because he looked young enough to be one of my sons, I asked him to play devils advocate with me.  I said, if I were your father, which of the two options would you suggest. He immediately said he would suggest the smaller of the two procedures, which takes approx. one and a half hours. My gut feeling was that he was to be my surgeon… The other doctors had recommended the much larger surgery. 

To make a long story short, after going through almost two years of pain and agony, he operated on me at the Lenox Hill hospital in NYC. On June 2, 2008.  At this writing I am almost pain free, and walking every day for approx. 1 – 2  miles.                                                             

I am indebted to Dr. Antonacci, for giving to me an extension of my life style without the extreme back pain, and would not hesitate to refer anyone to him that needs spine surgery.

I know most of Dr. Antonacci’s patients come to him having already been told they need spinal surgery and they are hoping that he will tell them otherwise.  Well, me and my Mom were the complete opposite.  We had been told time and time again that I did not need spinal surgery and that my (95 degree) kyphosis curve could be fixed with physical therapy.  We weren’t buying it. We found Dr. Antonacci thanks to the internet.  We made an appointment with him in his Manhattan, NYC office in March, 2008.  I can’t even tell you how excited we were to meet him.  I will never forget the first thing he ever said to me.  He had already seen my x-rays and he knew that he would do my spinal fusion before he even saw my face.  He said to me “How tall are you?” and I told him 5’4”, he said, “You WILL be taller”.  I know this is a testimonial about how AMAZING Dr. Antonacci is but I can’t really put words to it.  I can’t even describe how I feel about him, and every time I see him I can’t even remember the questions I had for him.  I couldn’t begin to tell you how generous he is [volunteering his time at Shriner’s in Philadelphia].  If you are reading this you either know how great he is or WANT to know… and my advice to those looking into spinal fusion or any other spinal surgery by Dr. Antonacci is MAKE THE APPOINTMENT!!     Just talk to him and you will see for yourself.  You will NOT be disappointed with him, he is so confident with himself but not in a cocky-high-school-jock way.  I have the highest respect for him and I think he is one of the best people in the entire world!  I told you I can’t talk about him without sounding like a Kindergartner.  I was told that my spinal fusion would take 12 hours and he did it in 4 1/2 .  So, if that doesn’t make you believe me, I don’t think I can convince you to see him.  He is one of the most amazing surgeons I have ever heard of, let alone met…. You probably know, you’ve probably seen the pages and pages of acknowledgements he has.  Honestly, seeing him was the best decision me and my Mom ever made.  Just make the appointment would you!?

When I first walked into Dr. Antonacci’s office I had been living with extreme back pain and leg tremors for over 4 years.  I was told by my other doctors I would just have to live with it and seek pain management.  I had all but given up on finding a solution and enjoying the things I loved to do.  I happy to say that 2 years later and one successful spinal fusion surgery performed by Dr. Antonacci that I have my life back.  I am able to play golf, travel, garden and even pick up my young grandchildren.

I am a most appreciative patient of Dr. Antonacci, and at age 75 have, perhaps, a slightly different perspective than many of his other patients.  Earlier this week I saw Dr. Antonacci in his office in New York for a follow up after surgery at the end of last year.  I was armed with X Rays, which he examined and determined to be indicative of  a sound recuperation.  When he inquired as to how I was feeling, my response was that I feel better and am more pain free than I’ve been in years.

Until he asked me, I frankly didn’t realize just how good I feel!  I’m pain free, am recovering my flexibility, and playing  lots of golf again.  Unfortunately, I’m not hitting the ball as far as I used to, but I can’t blame that on him. 

In any event, I’ve had back pain for over 30 years, and had disc surgery back in 1977 or 1978.  None of this, as those of us with back pain are aware, gives us a good back – it only removes the source of pain.  I was diagnosed last year with severe stenosis, and after several epidural treatments, was told that I was a candidate for surgery.  I saw Dr. Antonacci in his office, and less than a week later went in to Lenox Hill Hospital for surgery.  By the end of that week I was home.

An unforeseen complication slowed my recovery, unfortunately, but now, some 10 months after surgery, I feel brand new, and have for some time.  As mentioned, I’m totally free from pain, have regained most flexibility, and have long been back at work and on the golf course again.  My recovery is certainly testimony to Dr. Antonacci’s skill as a surgeon.  In addition, I found him to be attentive and concerned, with a comfortable and open bedside manner.   Nobody likes to have surgery, but if you need it for an orthopedic problem, he is indeed, THE MAN!

Words can’t describe how wonderful I feel since I had my surgery and how pleased I am with the outcome.  I had a 2 level fusion at L4-5 and L5-S1 and 2 genetic deformities corrected – one in the SI joints and one in the facets.  Although I am only 6 months out from the surgery, my quality of life continues to improve daily.  Every day I am amazed by the little things I am able to do that I wasn’t capable of doing prior to the surgery.

Dr. Antonacci did not jump into performing surgery on me.  He exhausted every other option first.  I went through nine months of extensive diagnostic testing with an excellent pain management doctor.  Only when it was determined that surgery was my only option did Dr. Antonacci decide that surgery was necessary to correct the problems with my back.  I am so grateful that Dr. Antonacci took his time and didn’t rush into operating on me.

I think it is so important that there be a very good doctor/patient relationship.  Dr. Antonacci  always answered all of my questions as well as my parent’s questions.  I have also found him to be a very compassionate doctor in his own quiet way.  Another person who should be mentioned here is Dr. Antonacci’s Assistant, Chris.  She has also been so helpful in getting messages to Dr. Antonacci, and although she is so overwhelmed with work, she will always, with a smile in her voice, help you with whatever problem you may have.  It is so comforting to know that I can count on my doctor, as well as his staff, for anything that concerns me regarding the surgery I had.

Like I said, I am 6 months out from the surgery and feeling really good.  I basically had no life prior to the surgery (that is how much pain I was in).  I am now about 80% pain free.  I have regained an enormous amount of movement so that I am able to touch my toes and bend backwards more then I need to for daily activities.  I believe that I can get more movement then I have now.  My Physical Therapist said that I have more movement then most people get after this surgery, but that could be due to the fact that I did gymnastics for years.

I know that the pain is slowly going away.  Everyday it is less and less.  One day in the near future I am sure I will wake up and the pain will be gone.  So every day I thank God for letting me find Dr. Antonacci.

Since I have scoliosis as well, I know I will be seeing Dr. Antonacci for years to come.  Believe me I am not unhappy about seeing him.  I just wish I didn’t have the scoliosis. However, when I think about this experience it makes me want to cry since never in a million years did I think I would ever have a doctor care about me as much as Dr. Antonacci and the other doctors involved in my treatment. Therefore, I know my care will always be in good hands with Dr. Antonacci.

When I was 17 years old I had a bad ski accident. I hit a fence doing 55 miles per hour, I broke 4 ribs across my back, cracked my vertebra at L5-S1 level and pulled ligaments in my kneecap.

When I arrived to the nearest hospital the x-rays showed the damage to my ribs but luckily for me the Dr.s there didn’t notice my cracked spine... 19 years later that accident finally caught up with me. I always had lower back pain on and off but for the past 3 years it became unbearable. I finally gave up with dealing with the pain and made an appointment with my family Dr. to start figuring outwhat my problem was.  An Mri and X-Rays revealed that I had Spondylolysis. Because I always had great health I was not accustomed to the riffraff I was about to fall into. My insurance company told me I needed to do physical therapy if that did not work which of course it didn’t, I then needed to undergo 3 epidural shots in the lower back. That too, didn’t work. I was told by at least 4 back dr.s that I was either too young for surgery, to just live with the pain, or gave me a 60% chance of being better. I knew in my heart that if I continued to wait I would meet the right Dr. 

My luck finally changed when I met Dr. Antonacci, a family friend referred me to him. My husband took me to his office and it didn’t take long after meeting with him that we both knew he was the right Dr.

His confidence was so reassuring, I went from being totally depressed about my current situation to thrilled to sign up for the surgery I needed. I had a minimally invasive back fusion and a cage with 4 screws put into place on May 9th of this year. I did feel an immediate difference in my back afterwards. I walked out of the hospital a day and half later by myself! Truly a miracle, I will never be able to show my appreciation enough to Dr. Antonacci for giving me my life back. Every now and then I break out into tears of joy for my new appreciated health and sense of well being.

My name is John Cantone and I have 22 years in the NYPD.  I was involved in 2 vehicular accidents within four months of each other in 2005.  My life began to change.  Suddenly, I had pain that ran through my neck in to my arms along with numbness and tingling.  I was now hardly able to lift heavy equipment while working.   After long hours on the job, I would come home in excruciating pain.  Now the job that I loved was becoming a burden.  There were some nights where the pain was so bad that I could not sleep.  Yard work that I used to enjoy doing left me in pain for days after. 

I was seen by Dr. Antonacci in August 2007.  Spinal Stenosis and nerve truncation at multiple levels within my cervical region was his diagnosis.   Surgery was recommended.  I deliberated with myself and my family for almost a year before finally deciding to do the surgery.   Dr. Antonacci spent a lot of time explaining the procedure gaining my confidence that surgery was the answer to my pain.

On August 15, 2008 I had a cervical diskectomy and fusion of 3 levels in my neck at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC.  I was a nervous wreck.  Before even seeing Dr. Antonacci that morning, the nursing staff all praised him for his work.    Dr. Antonacci again explained to my wife and I exactly what he would be doing and approximately when he would be done.    The surgery went well and as planned.  That evening I was really groggy and out of it.   On Saturday morning, I was able to get up and walk around the hallway of the hospital.  I was worried that my throat would keep me from being able to swallow or talk.  To my surprise, I really didn’t have any problems doing either.  Sunday morning, I was released from the hospital with a cervical collar. 

Each day into week, I make more progress then I had ever imagined.  After one week, I had no more pain in my arms.  The numbness was gone. I was able to take short walks around my block.  After two weeks, I went to my appointment with Dr. Antonacci.   I was able to stop wearing the cervical collar and begin doing small movements to my neck.  Four weeks later, I have more range of motion in my neck and have started physical therapy.

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Antonacci and his staff at the NY office.  They are extremely professional and caring.  I am recovering quicker than I had ever thought possible.  I would recommend Dr. Antonacci to anyone who is experiencing neck or back pain.  He has really made a big difference for me. When I was looking for a surgeon, I wanted one with confidence, caliber and compassion. It is very hard to find a doctor with all three of these qualities.  If you are in need of surgery and are reading this, you will be one happy patient. Dr. Antonacci is very honest and upfront with you. I knew two people that had seen him prior to my visit and one needed surgery and the other did not.  That was the first sign.  An orthopedic surgeon turned down a spine surgery because it was not needed?  You hear so much that orthopedic surgeons just want to cut you open and do surgery.  I was quite impressed even before I made the appointment.   Calling the office, you will speak to Chris. She is the most caring, organized, and superb person you will ever meet in a medical office. She will take care of all the paperwork for you, always with a smile on her face. Dr Antonacci found an employee that has the same precision that he possesses.  I had scoliosis as a teen and had spinal fusion by another surgeon at age 16. Twenty years later, I am always tired, legs burning, my elbow hurt. I was in a bad mood all the time; I would fall down the stairs. I was going to different physicians getting cortisone shots in different body parts, telling other physicians my back hurt, going to a urologist to fix my bladder, trying to figure out why I looked 5 months pregnant and only weighed 100 pounds.  I finally found a sports medicine doctor who took an xray of my spine. This doctor tells me I have spondylolisthesis grade 3. I was informed that I would need surgery immediately and to find a surgeon that knows what he is doing.  I never heard of spondylolisthesis nor could I say it. I had my surgery in January and I do not have all the symptoms listed above. I feel I am “back to life again”. I am willing to listen to any one of Dr Antonacci’s pre-operative patients and answer any questions.

About 2001 I decided to smarten up my property. Several days later there was back pain radiating down my leg. I went to an orthopedist and was told to begin epidural shots in my spine for pain control. I had four and then revisited the doctor. He gave me a prescription for pain. Fast forward it was now January 2007, and stupidly I lifted a TV and felt the crunch in my back. My 12 year old son had to drag me to the living room. After I could stand, 3 days later, I went for more epidurals which didn’t work.

Then the big guns...narcotics in very large doses. I put up with this until June 2007, then I went for surgery at another hospital.  

Twelve weeks later I had the worst sciatica and related nerve pain anyone could stand and this time I went on a morphine like drug, still no relief. So I got busy finding Dr. Antonacci. I spent weeks researching many others, made 20 phone calls easily. No one seemed to have the information I needed. 

Then while hunting on the web I found the "Second Opinion Dr." I didn’t think it would change my life, but it did...I have a life now!   

I met with Dr. Antonacci and he was the most understanding, friendly, and sensible physician I had ever gone to. We talked, he examined me and I agreed to get tests. After he read the tests, he and I came to a team decision to fix my L4,L5,and S1. His efficient office did all the work.  I never lifted a finger, just showed up at Lenox Hill Hospital. I went into surgery with Dr. Antonacci reassuring me that we would beat the pain for good.

I was made very comfortable, had a fantastically skilled procedure and woke up right away. I spent my recouperation time at Lenox treated for post-op pain, fed well, catered to,  and watched very carefully by Dr. Antonacci, and his marvelous staff. He promised me that by a certain time I would feel good again.   

Within one week of his stated recoup time it happened. I felt great.. I danced with my wife, walked with my son, and began to ride my bicycle.

Today, 7 months after surgery, I ride 24-30 miles a week, if it wasn’t for meeting my favorite doctor, I would still have no quality of life.

I had surgery for Scoliosis ( Harrington Rod and fusion) in 1977 at the age of 15.  Starting in the spring of 2007, I started having severe pain in my lumbar spine and down my left leg.  I went to an Orthopedic Surgeon who did some tests.  He said that my L4-5 disc was completely compressed but because of my fusion, there was nothing to be done.  My only option was pain management.  I then started researching the internet and to make a long story short, I found Dr. Antonacci .  I emailed his office and the very next day received a call from Chris, who scheduled an appointment shortly thereafter.  Dr. Antonacci’s first words to me at my appointment were "so they said there was nothing that could be done?  Well, they are wrong.".  He made my husband and myself feel completely at ease and Chris is an angel.  My diagnosis was Spondylolisthesis and Flat Back Syndrome.  My surgery was performed January 2008 a t Lenox Hill Hospital and although I still have a ways until complete recovery, I feel better than I have in years and can actually stand straight.

For approximately 50 years I suffered from lower back pain and lumbar spasms. As I became older the occasions and duration became more frequent and for longer periods. I had tried everything to avoid the surgeon’s table…orthopedic, chiropractic, pain management, physical therapy, etc. Being an avid golfer and spending most of the winter in Florida and summers north there never seemed to be the right time to investigate corrective surgery.

Last January, 2008, while in Florida I awoke one morning unable to get out of bed with severe sciatic nerve pain down my right leg. This was the first time I experienced sciatica. I was unable to sleep and needed help walking. With pain controlling medication I returned north in early February.

To make a long(er) story short, I saw Dr. Antonacci on a Thursday and he operated on my lower spine the following Friday. He successfully corrected two herniated disc conditions and resolved stenosis all in the L4 and L5 areas. I woke up in recovery pain free, came home the next day and have been pain free ever since.

In November of 2007 my lower back problems began. At first I had severe lower back pain, but it subsided several days after it began. As I have always been involved in sports and very active, I decided to go lift and play ball with my friends, since the pain was gone. That night I barley made it back to my dorm room. Several days after that I began to experience horrible sciatica down my right buttocks and leg. I had herniated my L5-S1 disc very badly. 

Over the next few months I would see countless doctors. I got two epidurals, one in the end of December, and one the beginning of January. They barely helped me. I was constant pain, and was getting by only because of advil and muscle relaxants. At the end of January I decided I would opt for surgery, and the most important thing for me was to find the right one. 

The last week of January I went to see several surgeons. Some of them made me extremely uncomfortable because of their pushiness, which made me question their intentions. But after I spoke to Dr. Antonacci I knew he was my guy. He understood what I was going through, and gave me a detailed explanation of what he would do in the microdiscectomy, and all of the risks involved with the surgery (including the percentage of chance for each possible risk). Unlike the other surgeons I had seen, he explained to me that surgery was not necessary, but that it would speed a two year recovery process  (or longer) into roughly a month and a half.

On February 11 I had my surgery. I was amazed when I woke up with no sciatica. It was one of the greatest feelings that I have ever experienced. I was walking the same night of the surgery, and it only helped that my overnight stay in the hospital was so pleasant. The nurses and doctors helped me with anything I needed, and I had my own room with TV and everything.

I am now 9 weeks and 2 days out of surgery, and I feel as if I had never had one at all. I am in the gym 6 days a week working out and getting back into shape (lots of core training!!). Dr. Antonacci truly changed my life, and I will forever be grateful.

     As an Anesthesiologist, I was looking for a surgeon who could perform the correct operation for my lumbar disc problem with great technical skill.  As a patient, I was looking for a surgeon who would explain my treatment options in a way that I could understand as if I were a lay person.  A surgeon who would answer all my questions thoroughly, both preop and postop.  And most importantly, a surgeon who instilled me with trust and confidence.  I feel blessed to have found all of this and more in Dr. Antonacci.

   In under 2 months after my lumbar fusion, I was able to walk up to 2 – 3 miles a day without limping anymore.  This was something I couldn’t have imagined.  I’m indebted to Dr. Antonacci for relieving my suffering and wouldn’t hesitate to refer any patient to him.

Scoliosis is something I have dealt with since I was eight years old (I was

26 when I had my surgery in 2007). I went to chiropractors, orthopedic doctors and several physical therapists for many many years. It finally came to the point where my option to remain healthy and strong would be lumbar spine surgery.

I first found Dr. Antonacci through my mother’s research on a National Scoliosis Foundation newsletter. He was highly recommended and one of the top rated surgeons. He also offered second opinion appointments and this is just what I was looking for.

The whole process from the initial appointment, to being explained the surgical process, to making the appointment for my surgery, to my hospital stay, and to my recovery was made so unproblematic and painless if you will, by Dr. Antonacci and all his colleagues.

Any concerns or questions I had were answered with such a remarkable promptness and care. And I would like to thank them and recommend their care to anyone who may ask because with their help I am able to know I will be strong enough to continue leading a healthy and a very full life.

       My son Michael is a handsome, lovable and fun loving young man; he is seventeen years old and is mentally challenged. He has various disabilities and has endured his share of pain in his young life and one of them is him having Scoliosis.

    Michael’s previous doctors and assistant’s were not as compassionate to Michael as Dr, Antonacci. They recommended a brace that he wore for a year, and by the second year it was causing Michael a lot of discomfort, he had rashes and pain caused by what seemed to us an ill fitting brace, and we thought possibly he needed a new one as Michael had grown some during this time. My Husband and I spoke to the Physicians about this, but they seemed not at all concerned. They insisted that he continue to wear the brace as is. Soon afterwards the brace caused Michael’s rash on his chest to bleed and we had to go to a dermatologist to have it diagnosed. The last visit we had with them, they had a bad attitude and made us feel very uncomfortable with them.  We felt so bad at that point that we decided we were never returning to their office and that we would start from the beginning and find a new Doctor.

    Consequently we found and made an appointment with Dr. Darryl Antonacci.  From the moment you meet with Dr. Antonacci you can tell he is not only an outstanding human being but also an outstanding Doctor.  He listened and addressed our concerns and arranged for various tests to be done. After all of this was done his recommendation was surgery. 

     We spoke with our son Michael of course, and as a parent you don’t want surgery done on your children unless it is absolutely necessary, but Michael was tired of being in pain and of wearing a brace. He wanted the surgery done so that he can could stand straight and not be in pain for the rest of his life. Michael’s surgery was performed at the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. This was one of the best hospitals I have ever been to.  The staff there was outstanding they treated Michael very kindly and they were very attentive towards Michael’s needs and recovery. Michael had surgery on August 9^th 2006 and was able to go back to school the following month on Sept 8^th.  Michael will be looking forward to running track this spring with the Special Olympics, this is something that he looks forward to every year and with Dr. Antonacci’s care and guidance we are sure he will come out a winner.

     Michael and all of us in the family are very happy with Dr.Antonacci and his staff and of course his successful surgery, and we wish to express our utmost faith and appreciation to his professionalism and compassion that he has shown to all of us.

      Having scoliosis has never been easy for me. After about three years of pain, I was willing to try anything. I’d gone to an orthopedist but he didn’t seem to care about what was best for me.  He told me I was too old for bracing and I felt like he saw that as the only option for dealing with my scoliosis. He never mentioned surgery, which I was prepared to agree to, and it just seemed as though he didn’t really know what he was talking about.  I assumed Dr. Antonacci would be similar to him.  I was very, very wrong.  From the second he walked in the door, I could tell that he was unlike any doctor I’d ever dealt with.   He is extremely knowledgeable and to the point.   He knows exactly what he’s talking about and he doesn’t try to avoid tough decisions like surgery. Dr. Antonacci was always upfront about what options I had, surgery being pretty much the only one.  He’s only interested in what’s best for you and I’ve never had a doctor like that before.   He always gave me the impression that he’s seen plenty of other cases just like mine so I never felt out of place there. He put my mind at ease about having the surgery and he’s the only doctor I would have ever trusted to perform such an intense operation.  I never felt nervous or scared about having the surgery because I knew Dr. Antonacci had everything under control.  I guess you can say I literally trusted him with my life and I would never have felt comfortable with anyone else doing the surgery.  Surgery was an easy decision for me, thanks to Dr. Antonacci, but the outcome was much harder to deal with than I had anticipated. Surgery is nothing to laugh at. It’s extremely painful and the first few days feel like the worst days of your life.  I felt helpless and frustrated that even the simple tasks of walking, eating, rolling over, getting out of bed, or going to the bathroom were nearly impossible.  But I’ve never made a more rewarding decision in my entire life.  I have no regrets. It’s worth the pain and recovery, which is very speedy I might add, to have my freedom back.  I can go through a day now without feeling any pain in my back.  I feel like the pain no longer controls me and I don’t have to take ibuprofren everyday now for my back pain. You can’t look at me anymore and see that I had scoliosis or surgery.  I’ve gotten control of my life and body back and there’s nothing more rewarding than that. So I thank Dr. Antonacci for being the caring and wonderful doctor that he is and for helping me get back a life I never thought I would ever have again.

Ummie was indeed cared for in a very special way which made her stay at Lenox Hill Hospial comforting & hospitable as well as most helpful in the healing and recuperation which is steadily improving day by day.

 This is what Dr. Antonacci did for me:

 I have worked as an engineer all my life and consequently spent most of my time behind a desk. I have however always taken pride in keeping my body in good shape with daily exercise, hiking, skiing and snorkeling.

 In October/November of 2006 I developed some serious back/spinal problems with pain so severe I was unable to function.

 To alleviate the problem I had Laminectomy Surgery in November 2006 elsewhere to no avail. With zero help from epidurals and very strong painkillers I was almost ready to give up, when I “found” Dr. Antonacci.

 His approach to my problem appealed to my “engineering mind”. With the aid of several MRI pictures he spent a great deal of time explaining in detail what he planned to do. He gained my full confidence to go ahead with what he recommended: Revision decompression and spinal fusion.

 When I regained conciousness after surgery, the pain I had endured for 9 months was gone!

 Six weeks later I do daily walks of 1 1/2 miles, I am back driving, and my wife and I even went from Huntington, Long Island to NY City by train. Dr. Antonacci has literally given me my life back.

        I suffered back pain on and off for many years. Last year the severity of my pain increased and I had difficulty walking.        Working in the office all day, bartending part time at night, working on the house, carrying anything and being stubborn can all be reasons for my back injury.  I am sure playing football and weight lifting in my past did not help my back too much either.  After a year of visiting many doctors, chiropractors, surgeons and pain specialists, I met Dr. Antonacci.  At this time I had been in pain for over a year causing neurological and psychological issues.  I just wanted someone to tell me they could fix me.

       Before surgery I was a crying zombie.  Today I am back at work and going to the gym doing exercises.  I still have some muscle related pain but I see a light at the end of the tunnel.  Dr. Antonacci at first was just my surgeon.  He has helped me and my mother who he also diagnosed correctly with a shoulder issue.  Now he is not just my surgeon he is a friend for life.  I would recommend him to everyone.

   Skilled, Compassionate, Accountable.  These are my observations as a grateful patient of Dr. Antonacci over the past 4 years.  As a school teacher with 45 years of experience, I was plagued with debilitating back pain that compromised my ability to continue in the job I love.  After receiving many recommendations for a spine surgeon, one name kept being mentioned: M.  I had a severe car accident in 1991 and lived with back pain for years.  My first really bad episode was in 2002 when I bent over and the pain was so bad I dropped to my knees and had to call 911.  I was out of work for three weeks.  Over the next few years, the episodes kept getting closer together and the recuperation time got longer and longer.  I tried all the conservative approaches: Bed rest; Physical Therapy; and Epidural shots.  Nothing gave me long term relief.  My local Orthopedist kept telling me it was all muscular and there was nothing he could do for me.  It got to the point where I couldn’t go to work without taking pain pills.  I got an appointment with Dr. Antonacci who, upon looking at my MRIs for the last 3 years, saw immediately that I had an annular tear in one disc and severe degenerative disc disease in two discs.   After additional diagnostic tests to confirm his diagnosis, the recommendation was surgery.  I had spinal fusion June 24^th, 2005.  I am now pain free and don’t take pain pills to get through my day.  I can’t thank Dr. Antonacci enough for giving me back my life!!

   I’ve had a slight herniated disc for many years which periodically caused me great pain.  This past summer, I missed a step on a set of stairs and jarred my back.  I started to lose strength in my right leg and it was also going numb.  I had an MRI and went to a local Orthopedist who gave me a cortisol shot.  It wasn’t improving so I went to my wife’s surgeon, Dr. Antonacci.  One look at the MRI and he saw that a piece of disc fragmented off and was sitting in my spinal canal indicating this was the cause of the numbness and weakness.  Less than a week later Dr. Antonacci removed the disc fragment and the symptoms almost immediately started to dissipate.  I am five months out of surgery and feel better than I have in years!!  Thank you Dr. Antonacci.
