It was my good fortune to have gone to Dr. Antonacci for a second opinion after having been told that I needed 2 operations, one for my lumbar and another for my cervical Stenosis. Prior to seeing him, the pain in my lower back radiating into my legs was so intense that walking, even with a walker, and performing simple household tasks was extremely difficult. In addition, I had limited motion in my neck and problems with balance. There was pain going down my arms into my hands and a significant loss of dexterity in my left hand. (I am a lefty.) The pain resulted in sleepless nights and the inability to drive. All these symptoms resulted in my being fairly housebound.
During my first appointment with Dr. Antonacci, I was impressed with his thoroughness, willingness to answer my questions and clarity of his explanations. As a person with other medical issues and medications that could impact surgery, it was especially important to me to have a surgeon who would work with my other doctors if necessary. His approach to the lumbar surgery was different from the first surgeon. He took the time to explain his reasoning in a logical manner. The fact that he estimated the surgery would take between 1 1/2 hours as opposed to the other surgeon’s 4 1/2 hours was amazing.
After a mylegram and a neurological consultation, he determined that the laminectomy operation would be first. On January 22nd, 2012 I had that operation. The pain in my legs was completely gone the next day and has not returned. On June 20th, 2012 I had the cervical operation in the new Princeton Hospital. The motion in my neck, my balance, the ability to sleep without waking from pain and the return of dexterity in my hand gets better with each day, as Dr. Antonacci predicted. I can’t say enough good things about this gifted surgeon who is also thoughtful and considerate. Thank you for giving me back a quality of life I didn’t think was possible. I can walk without any aids, drive and look forward to a fuller life.
Dr. Antonacci’s team is also wonderful. Dr. Cuddihy and the office staff are always lovely and pleasant. Joel is a jewel. He is helpful, reassuring and always gets back to you in a timely manner. Thank you all for making a difficult experience as good as it could possibly get.
