Meet Randal R. Betz, MD

Randal R. Betz, MD is a nationally recognized surgeon with over 30 years of experience in caring for children and adults with problems of the spine, including scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, fused vertebrae, neuromuscular scoliosis, and other spine-related conditions.

Dr. Randal Betz began his career caring for both children and adults, but for the past 15 years has been entirely dedicated to the treatment of children and adolescents with pediatric spine problems. His particular expertise and passion is developing and offering the newest treatment options.

In addition to his expertise in management of spine disorders, Dr. Randal Betz is internationally recognized for his expertise in pediatric spinal cord injury (SCI). Over the last 20 years, he has advanced medical and rehabilitation approaches for children with SCI, particularly in the areas of neuromuscular scoliosis, hip subluxation and dislocation, upper extremity tendon transfers, and functional electrical stimulation for restoring upper and lower extremity function, as well as bowel and bladder. In addition to the clinical care of children with SCI, Dr. Betz has been one of few researchers who has pioneered new treatments to improve function and prevent complications in these children.

Previously, Dr. Randal Betz was Chief of Staff and Medical Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program at Shriners Hospitals for Children, Philadelphia. He is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Betz earned a medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, completed an internship in general surgery and residency in orthopaedic surgery at Temple University Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children, and undertook a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware. He received several distinguished postdoctoral fellowships, including the ABC Traveling Fellowship, the North American Traveling Fellowship, and the Berg-Sloat Traveling Fellowship. In 2013, Dr. Betz served as the senior mentor for the Scoliosis Research Society Traveling Fellowship.

He is an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society (for which he served as President in 2005), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Paraplegia Society, American Spinal Injury Association, and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America. Dr. Betz is a recipient of the A. Estin Comarr Memorial Award for Clinical Service from the American Paraplegia Society, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Spinal Injury Association.

In 2014, Dr. Betz moved his practice to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to join forces with Dr. Darryl Antonacci to offer a combined 50+ years of spine surgery experience. In this new location, Dr. Betz continues his clinical practice and research in offering and advancing effective treatment options for infants, children, and adolescents with scoliosis, spine problems and orthopedic issues related to spinal cord injury.
